2017 NCAC Women's Tennis Players of the Week

May 1st

Maggie Sweeney, Kenyon
(Grosse Pointe, MI/South)  

Kenyon sophomore Maggie Sweeney posted a personal record of 5-0 at the 2017 NCAC Women’s Tennis Championships to help lead the Ladies to their first NCAC title since 2001. In the 5-4 win over DePauw in the championship match on Sunday, Sweeney clinched the league title for the Ladies with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over Gretchen Wilder in the second singles flight. She was also 3-0 on the week in the second doubles flight with junior Grace Winslow (Sunrise, FL/South Plantation), to go along with posting a 2-6, 6-0-6-1 come-from-behind win over Denison’s Emma Alsup in the semis on Saturday afternoon.

April 24th

Rachel Molé, Wooster
(Jamestown, NY/Frewsburg Central)   

Wooster senior Rachel Molé helped the Scots post a .500 record in the regular season play for the first time since 2003-04 by winning all four of her matches last week in a pair of team wins over Ohio Wesleyan, 5-4, and Heidelberg, 9-0.  Her singles wins came in the second flight, while her doubles victories came out of the top flight. Molé is now tied for first in program history with 36 career wins in the top doubles flight.

April 17th

Maddie Lee, DePauw
(South Bend, IN/Penn)  

DePauw senior Maddie Lee helped the Tigers to a perfect 3-0 record in NCAC West action last week by posting a personal record of 5-1 in the top flight in both singles and doubles play. She posted a perfect 3-0 mark in the top singles flight in the three matches combined, logging wins against OWU’s Lauren Corcoran 6-3, 6-0, Denison’s Lauren Hawley 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, and Wittenberg’s Carli Milano 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, Lee joined with senior Gretchen Wilder (Batesville, IN/Oldenburg Acad.) for a pair of wins over OWU, 9-8 (9-7), and Wittenberg, 8-0.

April 10th

Brooke Butterworth, Ohio Wesleyan
(Burlingame, CA/Santa Catalina)  

Ohio Wesleyan junior Brooke Butterworth played a vital role in leading the Bishops to a pair of wins last week against Wittenberg, 9-0, and Allegheny, 5-4. Butterworth joined forces with sophomore Sydney Simmons (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) for doubles victories in both matches. She then came from behind for a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win at third singles against Wittenberg’s Alivia Livesay, before knocking off Allegheny’s Amanda Ress Liere in third singles by a 6-2, 6-1 margin.

April 3rd

Lauren Hawley, Denison
(Dayton, OH/Archbishop Alter)  

Denison sophomore Lauren Hawley had a personal record of 6-0 to lead the Big Red in three total matches last week. Hawley went a perfect 3-0 in the top doubles flight on the week with classmate Emma Alsup (Nashville, TN/Harpeth Hall), while also posting three victories in the top singles flight against Wooster’s Joy Li 6-1, 6-1, Lewis & Clark’s Wiktoria Plawska 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, and Allegheny’s Gabby DeLeon 6-3, 6-0. The 30th-ranked Big Red picked up victories last week over Wooster, 8-1, and Allegheny, 9-0, while suffering a narrow 5-4 loss against No. 29 Lewis & Clark on March 30th.

March 27th

Michaela Thompson, Allegheny
(Kula, HI/King Kekalike) 

Allegheny senior Michaela Thompson had a solid week on the Gators’ spring break trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with a perfect 3-0 record in the second singles flight with sophomore Heidi Mueller (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern) and a 2-1 mark in the second singles flights. She posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over BVU’s Tarynne Kinghorn and a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over St. Thomas’ Caitlin Bakke. The Gators finished the trip with a 1-2 team record that included a 9-0 win over Buena Vista on March 22nd. 

March 20th

Shannon Sertz, Wooster
(Fairview, PA/Fairview) 

Wooster freshman Shannon Sertz combined for a personal record of 4-0 last week as the Scots kicked off their spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins over Concordia (WI), 5-4, and Webster, 7-2. Sertz posted back-to-back wins in the fifth singles flight in the two matches, which included the match-clinching point against Concordia with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win over Emma Sievers. She also went 2-0 with senior Dora Mase (Columbus, OH/Whetstone) in the third doubles flight on the week. The Scots are currently riding a three-match winning streak for the first time since 2013.

March 13th

Carli Milano, Wittenberg
(Beavercreek, OH/Carroll)  

Although Wittenberg lost three of its four matches in Orlando, Florida, last week, sophomore Carli Milano was a force in the top singles flight as she combined to post a 3-1 record on the week, highlighted by a 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-8) come-from-behind win over Cedarville’s Lauren Jackson on March 6th.

March 6th

Lauren Hawley, Denison
(Dayton, OH/Archbishop Alter)  

Denison sophomore Lauren Hawley was a perfect 4-0 on the weekend in top flight action, which included a pair of top doubles wins with classmate Emma Alsup (Nashville, TN/Harpeth Hall). In singles action, Hawley knocked off Hope’s Nancy Benda 6-1, 6-2, before notching a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kalamazoo’s Maria Franco. The Big Red dropped a 7-2 team decision against No. 29 Hope on Saturday, before earning a 9-0 win at Kalamazoo on Sunday.

February 27th

Sarah Hughes, Oberlin
(Haddonfield, NJ/Merion Mercy Acad.) 

Oberlin junior Sarah Hughes went a perfect 4-0 between the top singles and doubles flights in a pair of matches in Indiana last weekend. In a 6-3 team loss against DePauw, Hughes topped the region’s 20th ranked singles player Gretchen Wilder by a 6-2, 6-3 margin. She also posted a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 come-from-behind victory over Centre’s Neho Rao. In the top doubles flight, Hughes and senior partner Emma Brezel (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber) extended their winning streak to six-straight with wins over DPU, 8-4, and Centre, 9-8 (10-8).

February 20th

Lauren Corcoran, Ohio Wesleyan
(Tampa, FL/Plant) 

Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Lauren Corcoran posted a combined record of 3-1 in a pair of matches on Saturday. In a 6-3 win over St. Mary’s (IN), she recorded an 8-1 win in the top doubles flight with junior Brooke Butterworth (Burlingame, CA/Santa Catalina) and notched a 6-0, 6-3 win in the top singles flight against Monica Davy. Corcoran also logged a win at first singles against Otterbein’s Rylie Markle by a 6-4, 6-0 margin.

February 13th

Emma Brezel, Oberlin
(Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber)  

Oberlin senior Emma Brezel combined for a 3-1 record in a pair of home matches on Saturday against Baldwin Wallace and Indiana (PA). Against Indiana (PA), Brezel and junior Sarah Hughes (Haddonfield, NJ/Merion Mercy Acad.) knocked off Division II’s 15th-ranked doubles team by a score of 9-8 (7-2). Brezel was also a double winner against BW with an 8-2 win in the third doubles flight with senior Olivia Hay (Portland, OR/International School of Beaverton) and a 6-2, 6-3 win in the top singles flight against Imani Robinson.

February 6th

Diana Aboubakare, Kenyon
(Orange, CA/Luther) 

Despite dropping a 6-3 team decision against nationally-ranked Northwestern Ohio of the NAIA, Kenyon junior Diana Aboubakare improved to 7-2 on the year in singles competition with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) top flight win over Amanda Schneider, the fifth-ranked singles player in the NAIA.
