2018 NCAC Women's Tennis Players of the Week

 
April 30th
 

Annie Reiner, Kenyon
(New York, NY/Riverdale Country Day) 

Kenyon junior Annie Reiner helped guide the Ladies to their second-straight NCAC women’s tennis title last weekend after finishing the weekend at the 2018 NCAC Championships with a 2-1 record in the sixth singles position and a 1-0 mark at third doubles with freshman teammate Kayla Pukys (Louisville, OH/Louisville). Reiner clinched the Ladies’ 5-0 win over Denison in the championship match with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Charlotte Purnode.

Erika Oku, Kenyon
(Hinsdale, IL/Central) 

Kenyon freshman Erika Oku upper her spring singles record to 19-0 last week in leading the Ladies in a pair of 9-0 NCAC East wins over Wooster and Allegheny. Playing in the top singles spot last week, she picked up a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins over Wooster’s Joy Li and Allegheny’s Amanda Ress Liere. In doubles play, she joined with freshman Ilana Blackwood (Saint James, Barbados/Queens) for an 8-2 win in the second flight against Wooster, before teaming with junior Maggie Sweeney (Grosse Pointe, MI/South) for an 8-1 victory in the top flight against Allegheny.

April 16th
 

Megan Hickey, Denison
(Western Springs, IL/Lyons Twp.) 

Denison junior Megan Hickey helped guide the Big Red to a 2-0 record in NCAC West play last week. She was a perfect 2-0 on the week in singles action, opening with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wittenberg’s Sarah Gallup in the second flight, before posting a thrilling 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (13-11) come-from-behind win over DePauw’s Meredith Breda in the third flight on Saturday afternoon. She also notched an 8-2 win in the second doubles flight against Wittenberg with classmate Ashley Hammons (Louisville, KY/Sacred Heart Acad.) as her partner.

April 9th
 

Grace Winslow, Kenyon
(Sunrise, FL/South Plantation)

Kenyon senior Grace Winslow helped the Ladies to a 2-1 record and a third-place finish last weekend at the annual Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin. Playing in the fifth singles flight, Winslow recorded a trio of wins against Whitewater’s Julie Martin 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, WashU’s Sanja Tripathy 1-6, 6-3, 11-9 and Gustavus Adolphus’ Lilly Hartman 6-0, 6-1. At second doubles, she paired with junior Maggie Sweeney (Grosse Pointe, MI/South) for a 2-1 record on the weekend, logging an 8-6 win against Whitewater and an 8-3 victory against Gustavus Adolphus. The Ladies opened play in Wisconsin with a 5-4 win over Wis.-Whitewater on Friday night, but the team’s school-record 13-match winning streak came to an end later in the night with a 6-3 setback against No. 12 Washington (MO). Kenyon then finished off play on Saturday with a 7-2 win over No. 40 Gustavus Adolphus in the third-place match.

April 2nd
 

Maggie Sweeney, Kenyon
(Grosse Pointe, MI/South)

Kenyon junior Maggie Sweeney helped guide the 22nd-ranked Ladies to a trio of wins last week by posting a 3-0 record in doubles play and improving to 11-0 on the season in singles action with a pair of victories. Individually, Sweeney posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Denison’s Megan Hickey in the third flight and a 6-1, 6-1 second-flight win over Ohio Wesleyan’s Adrienne D’Alewyn. She also joined with senior Grace Winslow (Sunrise, FL/South Plantation) for three wins in the second doubles flight, recording wins against Denison, 8-5, Ohio Wesleyan, 8-2, and SUNY-Geneseo, 8-0.

March 26th
 

Sarah Hughes, Oberlin
(Haddonfield, NJ/Merion Mercy Acad.) 

Oberlin senior Sarah Hughes went unbeaten last week playing exclusively in the top flight in both singles and doubles competition to lead the Yeowomen to a perfect 3-0 record on their spring break trip in central Florida. Hughes went 3-0 on the week in the top singles flight, highlighted by a 6-4, 6-2 win over Grinnell’s Milica Cvrkota who entered the match with a 14-0 record in dual matches and a 21-2 mark overall. In doubles action, Hughes joined with two different partners for a 3-0 mark in the top flight, led by a thrilling 9-8 (7-5) win over St. Lawrence with sophomore teammate Delaney Black (Huron, OH/Huron).

March 19th
 

Lauren Corcoran, Ohio Wesleyan
(Tampa, FL/Plant) 

Ohio Wesleyan junior Lauren Corcoran went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 as part of the third doubles team to help lead the Bishops to a perfect 3-0 team record on their spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. The only set she lost on the week in singles action was via a tiebreaker, while her three doubles wins were by scores of 8-2, 8-4 and 8-3.

March 12th
 

Diana Aboubakare, Kenyon
(Orange, CA/Luther) 

Kenyon senior Diana Aboubakare posted a perfect 8-0 record in leading the 22nd-ranked Ladies to a perfect 4-0 record last week on their spring break trip in Lake Nona, Florida. Two of the Ladies’ four wins came against nationally-ranked opponents on the final day of the trip, earning a 9-0 win over No. 31 Millsaps and an 8-1 victory over No. 37 East Texas Baptist. Aboubakare joined with freshman Erika Oku (Hinsdale, IL/Central) for a perfect 4-0 record in the top doubles flight on the trip, while her singles wins came against Oglethorpe’s Caroline Johnson, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8, Wheaton’s (IL) Katie Park, 6-2, 6-0, Millsaps’ Grace Gaskins, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6, and ETBU’s Elisa Kendall, 6-1, 6-2.

Joy Li, Wooster
(Beijing, China/Weil Tennis Acad., CA) 

Wooster sophomore Joy Li combined for a 5-1 record on the week between the top singles and doubles flights in a trio of team wins over Mount Union, 6-3, Calvin, 5-4, and Marietta, 9-0. Her singles wins came against Mount Union’s Gretchen Groves, 8-1, Calvin’s Leah Newhof, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 1-0 (10-8), and Marietta’s Victoria Xie, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action, she picked up two wins in the top flight with senior partner Morgan Wagers (Coshocton, OH/West Holmes) against Mount Union, 8-6, and Marietta, 8-0.

February 26th

Lauren Corcoran, Ohio Wesleyan
(Tampa, FL/Plant) 

Ohio Wesleyan junior Lauren Corcoran posted a perfect 4-0 record in a pair of wins last week against Otterbein, 7-2, and Centre, 6-3. She logged a pair of top flight singles wins against Otterbein’s Sydney Bergman 6-0, 6-2, and Centre’s Abigail Kent by a 6-4, 6-0 margin. She also joined with classmate Meryl Reams (Bloomfield, Hills, MI/Lahser) for a pair of wins in the third doubles flight.

February 19th
 

Carli Milano, Wittenberg
(Beavercreek, OH/Carroll) 

Wittenberg junior Carli Milano posted a personal record of 3-1 as the Tigers split a pair of matches in Indiana on Saturday with a 7-2 win over St. Francis (IN) and a narrow 6-3 loss against Saint Mary’s (IN). Both of her singles wins came in the top flight against St. Mary’s Christina Lombardi 6-3, 6-1, and St. Francis’ Hannah Haas by a 6-2, 6-2, margin. She also joined with freshman Kathleen McGuff (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) for an 8-5 win in the second doubles flight against St. Francis.

February 12th
 

Delaney Black, Oberlin
(Huron, OH/Huron) 

Oberlin freshman Delaney Black was one of several players to post a 4-0 record on Saturday for the Yeowomen in a pair of 9-0 home wins over Baldwin Wallace and Otterbein. Black and sophomore Rainie Heck (Chapel Hill, NC/East) posted an 8-3 win in the top doubles flight against BW and an 8-1 victory in third doubles against the Cardinals, while Black was also perfect on the day in the fourth singles spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win against BW’s Becca Liebler and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Otterbein’s Marriella Briones.

February 5th
 

Maggie Sweeney, Kenyon
(Grosse Pointe, MI/South)

Kenyon junior Maggie Sweeney helped lift the 30th-ranked Ladies to a season-opening 5-4 win over the NAIA’s 12th-ranked team, Northwestern Ohio, on Saturday. She teamed with senior Grace Winslow (Sunrise, FL/South Plantation) for an 8-2 win at second doubles, before picking up a 6-2, 7-6 win at third singles against Melena Lopez.
