There is currently a three team race at the top of the North Coast volleyball standings as Wittenberg (3-0, 10-5), DePauw (2-0, 15-1) and Hiram (2-0, 12-5) all remain perfect after two full weeks of conference play. League matches will continue this week with three matches on Tuesday, one on Wednesday and three more on Saturday.
ALLEGHENY posted a 2-1 record in non-conference action last week. The Gators defeated Pitt.-Bradford, 3-2, at home on Wednesday, before splitting a tri-match in Rochester, New York, on Saturday. AC fell, 3-0, to Rochester in the opener before storming back from a two-set deficit to defeat Houghton, 3-2. Sophomore Sarah Swartz (Pittsburgh, PA/N. Allegheny) led the Gators on the week with 29 kills, 13 blocks (6 solo, 7 asst.) and 10 digs, including a 17-kill, seven-block performance in the victory over Houghton.
DENISON went 2-1 on its home court last week, defeating Oberlin, 3-0, on Wednesday, falling to Hiram, 3-0, on Saturday and defeating Earlham, 3-1, also on Saturday. Freshman Rachele Lock (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius) paced the Big Red offense with 34 kills and a .325 hitting percentage in 10 total sets, which included a career-high 15 kills in the four-set win over Earlham.
DEPAUW extended its winning streak to 15-straight following three wins last week over Marian (IN), 3-0, Wooster, 3-0, and Defiance, 3-0. Sophomore setter Faith Rolwes (Chesterfield, MO/Villa Duchesne) set the table for the DPU offense by dishing out 92 set assists to go along with 22 digs, eight kills and seven blocks (1 solo, 6 asst.) in nine total sets.
HIRAM opened the week with a 3-2 setback against Heidelberg on Wednesday, but the Terriers bounced back to sweep a tri-match at Denison on Saturday with a pair of 3-0 victories over DU and Earlham. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Brewer (Barberton, OH/Manchester) paced Hiram on the week with 39 kills, a .360 hitting percentage, 11 blocks (2 solo, 9 asst.) and five digs in 10 total sets.
KENYON played just one match last week and fell to 13th-ranked Otterbein by a 3-1 margin in Westerville on Wednesday.
OBERLIN dropped a three-set match at Denison on Wednesday, but bounced back to earn its first league win of the year on Saturday in straight-sets against Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman Jillian Hostetler (Algonquin, IL/Dundee-Crown) racked up 16 kills on the week, including a career-best 11-kill effort in the win over OWU.
OHIO WESLEYAN dropped a pair of NCAC matches last week, falling to Wittenberg, 3-0, on Tuesday and suffering a 3-0 setback against Oberlin on Saturday. In six total sets on the week, freshman setter Shannon Schlater (Englewood, OH/Northmont) set the table for the OWU offense with 58 set assists.
WITTENBERG swept three matches against Ohio Wesleyan, Rose-Hulman and Transylvania to extend its current streak of set wins to 21-straight. Sophomore Kara Seidenstricker (London, OH/Jonathan Alder) served up nine aces in the victory over RHIT, earning her the school record in the 25-point era (2008-present) and landing her second on the all-time single-match list. For the week, Seidenstricker hit .387 at a pace of 3.22 kills per set while also racking up 14 aces, 25 digs and five block assists.
WOOSTER picked up a 3-0 non-conference victory over Muskingum on Tuesday before dropping a pair of 3-0 sets in Indiana on Saturday against DePauw and Defiance.
