Wittenberg (25-2) will be making a return trip to the eight-team NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championships after capturing its eighth regional title in program history last weekend at the Otterbein College Regional with three wins over PSU-Behrend, 3-0, Juniata, 3-1, and Ohio Northern, 3-0. The Tigers, who won the national title in 2011 and finished as the national runners-up in 2015, were then re-seeded as the top team for this weekend’s eight-team national tournament which will be held at Calvin College’s Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Nov. 16-18.
Wittenberg junior setter Karen Wildemann (Columbus, IN/North) was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Otterbein Regional after finishing the three-match stretch with 94 total assists, which included passing out 35 helpers in the 3-1 victory over ONU in the regional title match. She was joined on the all-tournament team by senior outside hitter Maddie Fischer (Minerva, OH/Minerva) and sophomore libero Taylor Yontz (Springfield, OH/Shawnee).
As the top seed this weekend, the Tigers will open play on Thursday evening in the national quarterfinal against eighth-seeded Swarthmore (23-7), winners of last weekend’s Stevenson Regional. The Garnet clawed their way through the regional bracket with wins over Randolph-Macon, 3-0, Carnegie Mellon, 3-0, and Johns Hopkins, 3-2. The winner of the Wittenberg/Swarthmore match will take on either #4 Johnson & Wales (34-0) or #5 Calvin (28-3) in the national semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Quarterfinal matches on the other side of the championship bracket will feature #2 Emory (29-6) meeting #7 Ithaca (23-8) and #3 Claremont-M-S (27-5) squaring off against #6 Gustavus Adolphus (25-6).
Wittenberg squared off against just one of the national qualifiers during the 2017 regular season, posting a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Emory back on September 2nd.
The 2017 national championship match is set for Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.
