NCAC regular season and tournament champion Wittenberg (25-2) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament after a 3-0 victory over Ohio Northern (29-6) in the regional finals at Otterbein University on Sunday afternoon. Box score
Following a tight first set that Wittenberg won, 27-25, the Tigers cruised to second and third-set victories 25-14 and 25-10 to earn the program’s eighth Regional Title.
Senior Maddie Fischer (Minerva, OH/Minerva) pounded nine kills in 19 attempts, in addition to seven digs and two service aces to lead the Tigers. Junior outside hitter Taylor Brown (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) added eight kills, four digs and four aces, while sophomore Aubrey Cox (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe) recorded a game-high 10 kills. Junior setter Karen Wildemann (Columbus, IN/North) dished out 35 set assits to go along with three digs and two kills. Defensively, sophomore Taylor Yontz (Springfield, OH/Shawnee) scooped up a game-high 19 digs. As a team, Wittenberg posted a .288 hitting percentage and limited Ohio Northern to just .074.
Following the match, Fischer, Yontz and Wildemann were all named to the All-Tournament Team, with Wildemann named Tournament MVP.
The win earned third-ranked Wittenberg a national quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, Nov. 16 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Wittenberg will enter the quarterfinals as the second-highest ranked team remaining in the field. The committee will confirm the 1-8 seeds and quarterfinal pairings with an updated bracket released following a conference call. The last time Wittenberg advanced to the national quarterfinals, the Tigers advanced to the national championship before falling to Cal Luthern in 2015.
