For the first time in a decade, North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champion Wittenberg (24-8) was knocked out of the NCAA tournament in the first round, falling to Calvin by a 3-0 score. The Tigers’ last first round loss came in 1999, when the Tigers lost 3-1 to Thomas More. Since 1999, Wittenberg reached the round of 16 in 2000 and 2003, the national quarterfinals in 2002 and 2004, and the national semifinals in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Tigers registered their 15th overall trip to the NCAA tournament this fall. Against Calvin, sophomore Katie Sumner (Dublin, OH/Watterson) contributed 10 kills and a .391 attack percentage. Freshman setter Jordan Mungovan (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) posted 20 assists, while freshman libero Christina Gilene (Milford, OH/McNicholas) recorded 10 digs. The NCAC has had at least one team in the NCAA Tournament field in 20 of its 26 seasons.
