Edited: Feb. 7, 2010 Wittenberg (13-0, 15-6) is one win away from clinching at least a share of its 12th NCAC championship. One win in their remaining three games would mean that the worst the Tigers would finish is 14-2, a record that Ohio Wesleyan could match, should they win their remaining league games. Wittenberg will go for the win at third-place (tie) Kenyon (7-5, 14-7) on Wednesday and at home against sixth-place Wooster (5-7, 8-13) on Saturday. Ohio Wesleyan plays once this week, a home game against seventh-place Hiram (3-9, 4-17). Denison (7-5, 15-6) and Kenyon enter the week tied for third. The Big Red travel to Earlham (1-11, 2-19) midweek and then to Allegheny on the weekend. In addition to their game against Wittenberg, the Ladies host Earlham on Saturday. ALLEGHENY senior guard Brittany Bell (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) shot 57 percent from the floor and 52 percent from behind the arc to average 15 points in the Gators’ 2-1 week. She knocked down 11 three-pointers, including five in a 69-57 loss to Wittenberg. Bell totalled 17 points versus the Tigers and added 13 in a 68-53 win over Hiram and 15 in a 71-46 win over Earlham ... DENISON postponed its game versus Ohio Wesleyan to today, after a power outage yesterday. Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, IL/Fenwick) tied her career-high of 19 points and pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as OWU took a 76-69 decision. Earlier in the week, Denison led first-place Wittenberg for the first 26 minutes of the contest but the Tigers rallied in the second-half and held off a late Denison run to edge the Big Red 67-63. Junior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, OH/Buckeye Valley) paced the Big Red with 17 points and four rebounds, while Nuzzo added 12 points ... EARLHAM freshman Jessica Wooden (Columbus, OH/Westerville Central) paced the Quakers with 12 points in a 65-58 overtime loss to Hiram ... HIRAM came out on top of a 65-58 overtime thriller against Earlham. Junior forward Caitlyn Ruese (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) scored a career- and game-high 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She hit seven-of-eight from the free-throw line and also grabbed seven rebounds ... KENYON freshman Katie Adlam (Carmel, IN/University School) helped the Ladies run their winning streak to three games with wins over Wooster, 55-42, and Oberlin, 73-53. Adlam totalled 21 points with six rebounds, four assists and five steals ... OBERLIN freshman Allison Anderson (Springfield, IL/Springfield) averaged 17 points and 6.67 assists per game as the Yeowomen dropped a trio of games last week. She poured in 23 points and nine assists in a 71-58 loss to Wooster ... OHIO WESLEYAN junior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor, OH/Mentor) hit a pair of treys during an 8-0 burst to open the second half of a 78-65 win over Oberlin and finished with a team-high 18 points. Quigney then posted 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds in a 76-69 win over Denison. The game against the Big Red was postponed one day due to a power outage in Granville. OWU also postponed its game against Wooster last week; that contest will be played Monday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. ... WITTENBERG won three straight and four in the last seven days to extend its win streak to 11 games - the most since the Tigers won 21 straight during the 2003-04 season. Senior wing Carrie Dyer (Copley, OH/Copley) averaged 16.3 points per game and 7.7 boards per game in the three games, while shooting 60 percent from the floor. She scored 19 points, had nine rebounds and six assists to lead all players in an 83-62 win over Hiram. Senior post Stephanie Boardman (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) needs four more rebounds to reach the 500 mark. Wittenberg also topped Denison, 67-63, and Allegheny, 69-57 ... WOOSTER posted a 1-1 record. The Fighting Scots opened with a 55-42 loss to Kenyon before having to postpone its road game at Ohio Wesleyan on Feb. 5. That contest will be played Monday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Scots used the rest to top Oberlin, 71-58. Sophomore post Kristen Schwartz (Farmdale, OH/Maplewood) combined for 27 points and 12 rebounds, highlighted by a career-high 17 points against the Yeowomen. Overall, she made 10-of-16 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws to go with three blocks and a pair of steals. |
