Weekly Recap (with links) pdf

Nine men and three women from North Coast schools competed at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at DePauw University March 12-13. The NCAC had a stellar showing as four men took home All-American honors and Wabash finished tied for ninth out of 57 teams.

ALLEGHENY junior Tony Dipre (Twinsburg, OH/Walsh Jesuit) was the top NCAC performer as he placed third in the men’s mile in a time of 4:11.92. With the third place finish, Dipre claimed his second straight All-America honor. Senior Mia Symoniak (East Snyder, NY/Amherst) placed 12th in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:44.39.

DENISON sophomore Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) placed seventh in the men’s mile in a time of 4:13.88. Salukombo earned his first track All-America honor but his second award of his young career after placing 33rd at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He is the first Denison male indoor track and field athlete to earn All-America status since 1999.

EARLHAM junior Chad Wertman (Holland, IN/Southridge) finished 10th in the men’s shot put with a best throw of 52 feet 2.5 inches. The mark was one position shy of the ninth qualifying spot in the finals.

OBERLIN junior Joanna Johnson (Chico, CA/Chico) competed in the women’s 5,000-meter run.

OHIO WESLEYAN junior Kat Zimmerly (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) competed in the women’s mile run. Senior Steve Brown (Redford Township, MI/Redford) competed in the men’s 55-meter hurdles while freshman Silas Jolliff (Cardington, OH/Cardington-Lincoln) took part in the men’s 400-meter dash.

WABASH senior Emmanuel Aouad (Terre Haute, IN/North) captured All-America honors by finishing third in the men’s 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.53. Aouad qualified for the finals after posting the fastest preliminary time and in the process set a Wabash school record of 7.48. Sophomore Kevin McCarthy (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) and freshman Jake Waterman (Noblesville, IN/Noblesville) placed sixth (1:54.67) and seventh (1:55.49) respectively in the 800-meter run. Waterman set a Wabash record in the prelim race with a time of 1:52.59, which was the second fastest time. The results mark the first time three Wabash runners earned All-American status at one NCAA indoor championship meet.

Little Giant Head Coach Clyde Morgan and Waterman were honored this past week as the US Track and Field and Cross Country Association Great Lakes Region Head Coach and Runner of the Year.

WITTENBERG freshman Josh Colbert (Urbana, OH/Urbana) placed 14th in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet 4.25 inches. He was the first Tiger to qualify for national s since Skip Ivery did so in the 55 hurdles in 2004.
