DENISON WOMEN REPEAT AS NORTH COAST RELAY CHAMPS ________________________ GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Denison's women successfully defended their team championship at the 15th North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Relays, held Jan. 30 at Denison's Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center. Ohio Wesleyan won four of 12 men's events and placed second in two others on the way to 84 points and its fifth championship in the season- opening event. Second-place Denison also won four events and totaled 76 points, followed by CWRU (61) and 1997 champion Wittenberg (61) in a tie for third, and Allegheny (55) in fifth. Team scores are compiled using the results of five running relays and the combined time/length of the top two performances in each of the seven remaining events. Nine different performers had a role in Ohio Wesleyan's wins in the long jump, triple jump, 800 relay and 1600 relay. Freshman Adam Torrence (Canton, OH/South) and sophomores Matt Churpek (Navarre, OH/Canton Central Catholic) and Jason Martin (Columbus, OH/Westerville North) each ran legs in the record-setting 800 (1:33.03) and 1600 relays (3:26.30). Denison set meet records in the sprint medley (3:40.27), 3200 (8:01.07) and distance medley relays (10:24.52). Denison won five events and totaled 86 points on the way to its second women's championship. Allegheny compiled 67 points with one win and four seconds, followed by Wooster (64) in third, 1997 champion Wittenberg (60) in fourth and Ohio Wesleyan (46) in fifth. No Denison performer took part in more than one winning event, but the duo of senior Kristen Bardou (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) and sophomore Denise Farley (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) broke the meet record in the 5000 relay (38:33.4) and the tandem of senior Carrie Barnes (New Martinsville, WV/New Martinsville) and junior Megan Tarr (Anderson, IN/Anderson) tied the mark in the pole vault (15'). __________________________________________________________________________ 1999 NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE INDOOR TRACK & FIELD RELAYS Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center Denison University - Granville, Ohio - January 30, 1999 __________________________________________________________________________ FINAL WOMEN'S TEAM SCORES 1.
