Edited: April 27, 2009 Denison swept three opponents, 15-1, on the way to its eighth straight and ninth overall team title at the NCAC tournament hosted by the Kenyon, April 25-26 [see attached bracket for complete results]. The Big Red, seeded first in the West Division, went past Wooster, 5-0, and Oberlin, 5-1, in the early rounds. Denison capped its championship run with a 5-0 victory over Kenyon, the top seed from the East, in the finals. The Ladies defeated Earlham, 5-0, and Allegheny, 5-4, before falling to Denison. Oberlin captured third with a 5-4 win over Allegheny in the consolation finals. Kenyon's 15 NCAC women's championships leads all conference teams. Allegheny claimed the first North Coast championship in 1985. The Big Red, the eighth-ranked team in Division III, have earned the North Coast's automatic bid into the NCAA III Women's Tennis tournament and has the potential to host first- and second-round matches. The pairings and sites are expected to be announced Monday, May. Notes: EARLHAM finished the regular season with a 4-10 record. Freshman Alex Softness (Atlanta, GA/Paideia School) posted a team-best 6-4 singles record, as a starter at No. 4. She combined with sophomore Nora Mineva (Pleven, Bulgaria/Lester B. Pearson) to go 5-5 at No. 2 doubles ... KENYON reached the championship match of the NCAC tourney before falling to the champion Big Red. Molly Yost (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) and Eva Ceja (Lubbock, TX/Lubbock) each posted 1-0 singles records and 2-1 doubles marks ... OBERLIN placed third in the conference for the second consecutive season. Freshman Ariel Lewis (Vacaville, CA/Vanden) posted a 21-4 record at No. 1 singles in dual meets ... Junior Mollie Campbell (Burlington, VT/Burlington) and freshman Becky Simon (Hilliard, OH/Darby) were double winners in OHIO WESLEYAN'S 5-2 defeat of Wooster in the consolation semis. They combined to win at No. 2 doubles, while Campbell won at No. 4 singles and Simon took No. 3 … WITTENBERG tied a school record with 15 dual match wins in 2009, and posted the team’s best winning percentage (.750) since 1989-90. Jayne Miely (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) went 8-0 in singles and doubles play last week … WOOSTER finishes the season with a 6-16 record. The Fighting Scots’ six wins are more than were accumulated in the past three seasons combined. |
